Celebrating NT Communities: 2026 Northern Territory Landcare Awards

Celebrate NT Impact Stories

Across the Northern Territory, people are restoring landscapes, bringing environmental learning into classrooms, and strengthening connections between communities and the places they care for.

The 2026 Northern Territory Landcare Awards recognise these efforts and celebrate the individuals, groups and organisations creating real impact through environmental stewardship, sustainable land management and community action.

As part of the national program, the awards highlight practical work happening on the ground across conservation, agriculture, partnerships and leadership, with NT winners progressing to the 2027 National Landcare Awards.

Australian Government Landcare Innovation Award
This award recognises individuals, groups and organisations finding new and practical ways to address land management challenges. This can include introducing new approaches on the ground, improving existing practices, or sharing knowledge in ways that help others adopt change more quickly. Nominations are open to farmers, landholders, land managers, Landcare facilitators or coordinators, Traditional Owners or First Nations organisations, research organisations, teachers, or a volunteer from or member of a Landcare group or any other environmental community care group.

Australian Government Individual Landcarer Award
Acknowledging an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to landcare, this award celebrates the people who are making a difference through practical on-ground action, as well as those raising awareness and encouraging others to take part in caring for land and water in their community. Nominations are open to an individual who may be a landcare volunteer, farmer, landholder, land manager, Landcare facilitator or coordinator, First Nations person including a Traditional Owner and Indigenous Ranger, teach, or a volunteer from a community-led environmental group.

Australian Government Community Partnerships Landcare Award
This award celebrates partnerships that bring people, knowledge and resources together to deliver meaningful outcomes for Landcare in their communities. Nominations are open to groups, networks, First Nations organisations, natural resource management organisations, research organisations, local government, farmers, landowners, land managers, schools, youth groups and community-led environmental care groups.

Australian Government Sustainable Agriculture Landcare Award
Recognising individuals, groups or organisations demonstrating leadership in sustainable and integrated land management on farms, this award highlights practices that protect soil, water, vegetation and biodiversity, while also supporting strong productivity and long-term outcomes for working landscapes. Nominations are open to farmers, First Nations organisations, Landcare groups or networks, farming systems groups, primary producers and/or farming enterprises.

First Nations Landcare Collaboration Award
This award celebrates partnerships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals or community groups working together to integrate First Nations-led Cultural land, sea and water management practices into landcare. It highlights approaches that strengthen inclusion, respect knowledge systems, and support more sustainable ways of managing land and natural resources together. Nominations for this award category must include BOTH the Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals and/or community groups who are working in partnership together.

Women in Landcare Award
Acknowledging the important contribution of women in landcare, this award celebrates individuals who show a strong commitment to promoting sustainable practices and supporting the responsible management of natural resources in their communities. An individual woman aged 18+ years and who is an Australian resident can be nominated for this award category.

NextGen Landcare Award
This award recognises young people who are leading the way in landcare. It celebrates individuals or groups aged 18-35 who are taking action through projects or awareness-raising, and encouraging others in their community to get involved in caring for the environment. Nominations are open to individuals or young adult groups aged 18 to 35 years. The individual or group needs to demonstrate their capacity to lead and encourage the wider community to engage and participate in managing the environment and natural resources in their local area.

Coastcare Award
Celebrating community groups and networks making a meaningful difference to coastal and marine environments, this award highlights practical work such as restoring dunes, protecting habitats and species, reducing pollution and waste, and engaging communities in caring for coastal and river systems. Nominations are open to a community group or network, including Coastcare and Landcare groups/networks, Dunecare, Rivercare, Bushcare, ‘Friends of’ groups, youth groups, First Nations organisation and other community groups responding to local coastal and marine environmental issues.

Junior Landcare Award
This award acknowledges young people and youth groups building knowledge, raising awareness and encouraging participation in landcare. It celebrates individuals, schools and community groups who are taking practical action and developing skills to care for the environment in their local area. Nominations are open to schools, day care centres and youth groups with children aged 5 years to 18 years. Eligible groups include primary schools, secondary schools, Scouts, Girl Guides, youth organisations or young community landcare teams. Nominations are open to individual children aged from 10 to 18 years.

Do you know someone in your community who’s part of this story?

You might know a community group restoring a local landscape, a teacher bringing environmental learning into the classroom, a community leader strengthening people’s connection to nature, or a neighbour making a difference close to home. You can also nominate yourself!

Nominations are free and open to individuals, groups and organisations across the NT, including volunteers and Landcare groups, farmers and landholders, First Nations organisations and ranger groups, schools and youth organisations, local government, researchers, and community-led environmental groups. Nominations can even be made posthumously.

Submitting a nomination involves responding to a set of questions, providing a short summary, and including supporting material.

We know that preparing a nomination can take time, so our team is here to support you with:
  • Identifying suitable award categories
  • Gathering information and supporting material
  • Drafting nomination responses
  • Reviewing and refining submissions before lodgement
