Waste Energy Benefits Us (WeBU) is a Landcare NT member group putting practical systems in place to reduce waste contamination and keep materials in use across community settings.
At Nightcliff Markets, this work takes shape through a pilot “Waste Energy Circular Economy” delivered in partnership with City of Darwin. Australian Standard bin colours are used with a simple message:
Through this R O W system, market-goers are enabled to separate Recyclables, Organics and Waste at the point of disposal. WeBU then collects the uncontaminated material and sends it to the right place for repurposing. This approach reflects what WeBU describe as blended value: good for you, the community and environment.
Reducing waste before it reaches landfill also means avoiding single-use items altogether. To support this, WeBU operates a commercial dishwasher and runs a Reusables Library at the markets, where reusable items are borrowed, washed, and returned for ongoing use. These everyday actions contribute to a shared goal of reducing waste sent to landfill by 50% by 2030.
That same systems-based thinking extends beyond the markets and into homes. WeBU has also played a direct role in advocating for council support for home composting, with City of Palmerston committing first through a $50 rebate on eligible purchases, followed by the City of Darwin with a $100 rebate. These rebates apply when composting systems are purchased through an NT supplier.
For residents of Darwin and Palmerston, choosing to purchase a compost bin or bokashi system through WeBU makes that purchase eligible for the council rebate while directly supporting their work. A free kitchen caddy is also included with WeBU’s composting systems, and their online store clearly links eligible products with the relevant rebate information, making it easier to get started with home composting.
Together, these local systems show how waste can be kept out of landfill and repurposed into something useful, practical and community-led: a circular economy built on everyday choices and shared responsibility.
