Katherine Savanna Glider Project

About Katherine Savanna Glider Project

The Katherine Savanna Glider Project was established to monitor local populations of the Savanna Glider along the Katherine River and surrounding areas. As the Top End's only gliding mammal, the Savanna Glider is highly dependent on tree hollows for shelter and is increasingly threatened by habitat loss due to land clearing and fire.

To support the conservation of this species, the project is installing artificial nest boxes, providing gliders with alternative habitat while enabling ongoing monitoring of local populations.

Project Activities

  • Installing artificial nest boxes to provide alternative habitat
  • Conducting population monitoring to record glider sightings
  • Documenting habitat use and environmental factors impacting the species
