About Waste Energy Benefits Us (WeBU)

Waste Energy Benefits Us (WeBU) exists to help innovate and initiate new ideas. WeBU is active in Darwin and in the process of helping create a ‘waste energy circular economy’.

So far:

    • Nine large composters have been built at Lakeside Drive Community Garden (LDCG). Thank you City of Darwin for the grant funding.
    • WeBU continues collecting food waste from selected suppliers and making compost for no-dig gardening at LDCG. This saves LDCG money.
    • WeBU has built a commercial dishwasher trailer. Dishwashing reusables is world’s best practice to help eliminate single-use plastic.
    • Environment Centre NT (ECNT) is engaged and has supplied WeBU with reusable dishes.
    • The dishwashing trailer combined with a Reusables Food Court has allowed a successful trial to be completed at Parap Markets.

What's Next?

WeBU is moving to Nightcliff Markets. Along with the dishwashing and Reusables Food Court operations, Bin Stations are also being introduced. A new initiative! Patrons will be invited to separate their waste ‘at the point of disposal’. Participation will be voluntary.

  • Bins in a ROW, separate as you throw.
  • ROW: Recycling, Organics, Waste.

Why? Separated waste is a source of energy for repurposing. Community empowerment!

Waste contamination is City of Darwin’s biggest pain point. COD is seeking good ideas and help to transition away from landfill.

  • Uncontaminated ‘certified compostable’ waste will be taken to the LDCG composters. A new source of feedstock.
  • WeBU shredder will be used to shred ‘certified compostable’ cups and containers. A source of carbon!
  • Separated food waste is a source of nitrogen!
  • Carbon and nitrogen combined are the ingredients for making compost. Microbe rich, black gold.
  • The grey water collected by WeBU from dishwashing reusables will also be used in the composting process.

Besides no-dig gardening, what else is compost used for?

  • Worms love being fed compost. They thrive. Two large, modular worm farms are being installed at Lakeside Drive Community Garden.
  • Everything associated with healthy compost worms is amazing. Worms. Castings. Wiz.

Don’t go to Bunnings to place an order to have your compost worms flown in.

  • Head to your local community garden! Lakeside Drive Community Garden will provide a local supply of gorgeous, healthy fully grown wrigglers (in a recycled 1 litre yogurt tub), pending LDCG grant funding for worm farms.
