Introducing Anthony Kerr as Landcare NT’s Land & Water Coordinator
Anthony Kerr has joined Landcare NT as Water & Land Coordinator, bringing more than two decades of conservation experience across the Top End, and a strong focus on supporting local action to protect biodiversity, livelihoods, and cultural heritage.
Originally from a French and British background, Anthony moved to the Territory in 2005 and completed a Masters of Tropical Environmental Management at CDU. Since then, Anthony has worked alongside the Northern Land Council and Territory NRM to help grow capacity across Indigenous Ranger groups, remote communities, farming collectives and Landcare volunteers.
His focus has always been community-first. “I believe that support to local grass roots communities to protect their patch is core to what has led me to the role of Water and Land Coordinator,” he says.
Anthony’s next chapter is fuelled by a passion to strengthen community-led conservation across the Territory. Together with Territory communities, Anthony is ready to grow deep roots, cultivate connections, and amplify local action: “I can’t wait to meet the passionate and knowledgeable Landcare group volunteers that I will be supporting and try to connect them with the support and opportunity that their tireless efforts deserve.” He sees potential for emerging nature-based markets to help reveal new support pathways. “Let’s make sure that the pathways forward can evolve in the right way,” he says.
When he’s not working, Anthony is often outdoors—swimming, hiking, and spending time with his two sons playing football, chess and music. Landcare activities with fellow volunteers have become a big part of his life.
He speaks fondly of walking through the different habitats that lead into the mangroves at Casuarina Coastal Reserve—”it is like entering into a different world.” He also names the plateau landscapes of West Arnhem Land as another favourite.
Anthony is hopeful for a broader shift in how we live with nature. “The destruction of natural habitats happens in an instant, yet takes decades to restore,” he says. “We need to appreciate the wisdom of those that understand and have a strong connection and history with their natural environment in order to protect it.”
