BioEd: Top End Biodiversity Education for the Next Generation

Empowering a New Generation of Environmental Stewards

Landcare NT is proud to be leading BioEd project, an innovative initiative that brings together science, education, and community to delve into the fascinating world of Top End ecosystems!

What is BioEd?

BioEd is a hands-on learning experience that empowers students to develop sustainable solutions to environmental challenges. BioEd offers youth focused environmental education to grow the next generation of environmental stewards.

Through a combination of scientific research, creative problem-solving, and collaboration, our young participants will gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make a real difference in their communities.

Our Aims

BioEd aims to:

  • Educate students about the role of native flora and fauna, water and invasive species in creating habitat, enhancing biodiversity, and addressing climate change.
  • Provide inquiry-based learning experiences that inspire students to appreciate the importance of conservation, sustainability, climate awareness and environmental justice.
  • Facilitate a collaboration between local environmental scientists and Top End primary schools to promote opportunities for science career pathways and community connections.
  • Offer opportunities for students, teachers, and schools to engage with a school revegetation project or local landcare activities.

Achievements To Date

BioEd was successfully piloted in 25 schools across Darwin region in 2024. The program delivered native flora and fauna education, reaching 640 students with 1280 learning hours. Results showed 89% of students learned at least 1 – 3 new facts and 100% teachers requested more!

In response to school requests, BioEd 2025 is delivering native flora, fauna, water, and habitat and invasive species education, with further sessions including climate resilience, insects and Larrakia traditional knowledge in development.

Why BioEd Matters

Environmental degradation is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and it's essential that we empower the next generation with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to tackle it. BioEd is more than just a project – it's a movement that aims to inspire a love of learning, a passion for conservation and sustainability, and a commitment to community engagement in our young participants.
