Connecting with Roper River Landcare Group
Last weekend, Britt and Emily from Landcare NT had a terrific visit to Mataranka to connect with the Roper River Landcare group.
Doris showed us the many sites in town that the community has successfully cleared of Neem trees, and the sites that continue to be a battleground. Roper River Landcare group facilitate Neem removal by educating the local community, business owners and stakeholders, providing skills building opportunities on weed removal and chemical handling.
In a meeting with the members we discussed the groups changing support needs (as they do it tough with such limited funding), reflections on past successful projects (riparian fencing along the Roper 30 years ago!) and aspirations for the future. We heard about the value of identifying as a Landcare group and their successful AGM. The meeting led to a delicious lunch from the Better Half Club, another dedicated group supporting Mataranka community endeavors.
Thanks to Rosemary and Doris our wonderful hosts for an enjoyable and enlightening day.
