Darwin High School Students Taking Action for Sustainability!
Landcare NT had the joy of getting dirty (and insanely sweaty) with the Students for Sustainability (SfS) at Darwin High School for a school native planting on Sunday, 8th December.
SfS are are a student-led initiative focused on introducing sustainable practices across the school campus and raising awareness about sustainability and climate change. SfS activities include on-school native revegetation plantings, a classroom paper recycling program, and yesterday’s event, creation of a tiny forest for heat mitigation and reconnecting the school community with nature. SfS have collaborated with a range of local organisations including Landcare NT, City of Darwin and Territory Native Plants to deliver this project.
A group of 25 students, parents, teachers and community Landcarers came along to plant out a courtyard area between the Middle and High Schools. A quick lesson from local expert (and parent) Anja demonstrated for the group how to successfully get the natives into the ground, followed by a few hours of sweating, planting, mulching and watering. The area was instantly transformed into an inviting and interesting greenspace where the school community will be able to enjoy a cooler outdoor area to relax and connect with nature.
Massive congratulations to the SfS and their dedicated teacher Maddie for a highly successful and important greening project, which will be a positive legacy for all current and future students at Darwin High School. It is also an inspiring example of young people leading local action for a healthy and sustainable Territory environment.
