First Glider Sighting Marks Key Moment for Katherine Savanna Glider Project

The Katherine Savanna Glider Project recently recorded its first Savanna Glider sighting for 2025 during a field survey conducted along the Katherine River, marking an encouraging development in the group’s ongoing monitoring work.
The female glider was observed in an area of high-quality habitat identified as a strong candidate site for the planned installation of nest boxes. These nest boxes will support longer-term monitoring efforts to improve understanding of local glider populations.
Surveys have continued on a regular basis since April, with volunteers returning to established sites and preparing to assess new areas in the coming weeks. Alongside glider monitoring, the group has recorded a range of native species during surveys, including Northern Brushtail Possums, a Northern Brown Bandicoot, and a Freshwater Crocodile.

This locally driven initiative reflects the important role of community volunteers in contributing to regional biodiversity knowledge through structured, place-based observation and data collection.
