Landcare Groups Invited to Participate in Great Cane Toad Bust 2025!

Watergum are looking for community groups across the nation to participate and run on-ground events for their Great Cane Toad Bust 2025!

The Great Cane Toad Bust 2025 will be the event’s fifth year, running from 18th to 26th January 2025! This event is focused on raising awareness about the environmental impacts of invasive cane toads, educating the community on distinguishing cane toads from native frogs, and teaching effective and humane removal methods.

Throughout the event week Australians are challenged to remove as many cane toad adults and tadpoles as possible from their local area through tadpole trapping by day and toad busting by night. Past events have seen astounding results including over 50,000 cane toads, at all life stages, removed from the environment during last year’s event alone! Participation is simple, individuals or teams can register via the Watergum website and head out toad busting/tadpole trapping as little or as often as they’d like throughout the week, then submit their data to our online dashboard to go into the running to win!

The impact this event can have through education and on-ground control is amazing however these results can't be achieved without on-ground support from community groups. Last year’s Great Cane Toad Bust featured over 25 community group-led events from Northern Territory to Northern NSW and this year the goal is to get even more community groups across the nation to champion on-ground engagement within their local areas. Some ways community groups can help widen the impact include:

• Promoting the Great Cane Toad Bust within their community and letting members know how they can get involved.
• Running community events such as educational talks or toad busts
• Promoting cane toad tadpole trapping within their area, including running workshops or loaning out traps to community members during the event week
