Launched in September 2023, the Flora, Fauna and Biodiversity Science Education Program brings local environmental scientists into Top End primary schools to share knowledge about native species, ecosystems, and the value of caring for country.
Semester 1 reached 14 schools in the Darwin region, delivered in partnership with Territory Native Plants and the Darwin Wildlife Sanctuary, with support from City of Darwin and Inspired NT.
Thanks to the City of Palmerston, Litchfield Council, and Power and Water, Semester 2 has grown to include 10 more schools across Palmerston and Litchfield, with new sessions on creating native gardens. The program gives young people practical tools to care for nature and inspires the next generation of environmental stewards.
Landcare NT is leading the Darwin Harbour Catchment Waterways Project, backed by $3.82 million in funding from the Australian Government.
Part of the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program, the project focuses on restoring and protecting key waterways in the Darwin and Palmerston regions, including Rapid Creek, Ludmilla Creek, Sandy Creek, and Mitchell Creek.
In collaboration with local Landcare groups, environmental organisations, and Larrakia traditional land and water managers, we are working to improve water quality, support native species, and boost biodiversity. A strong community education and engagement component ensures people across the region can learn about and connect with these vital ecosystems.
